Is There an Age You Have to Take Social Security? - Falcon Life and Health Insurance Advisors

Nobody makes you start Social Security — not at 65, not at 70, not at any age. You have probably got an age in your head, and there is not a required one. There is no deadline, and nobody sends you a letter telling you it is time.

Let me be straight with you first

I am not saying waiting is automatically the smart move.

The earliest you can start is 62. Your full retirement age is the age Social Security pays your full amount — for most people that is 67, and if you were born before 1960 it is a few months earlier.

Start at 62 instead of 67 and you are taking about 70 cents on the dollar, for the rest of your life.

But if you need the money at 62, take it. If your health is not great, waiting may never pay off. And if you are living on a fixed income, a check in your hand this year can matter more than a bigger check at 70.

That is your call to make, not mine.

So where does the “deadline” idea come from?

It comes from retirement accounts.

If you have a traditional IRA or a 401(k), the government does eventually make you start pulling money out, and there is a penalty if you do not. That is a tax rule with a real deadline in it.

And if you do not have accounts like that, that rule never touches you.

Social Security has nothing like it. No deadline, no penalty for waiting.

Medicare is a different story

If you are retiring at 65 without job coverage, Medicare does have a sign-up window, and missing it carries a penalty for life.

That is a completely separate thing from Social Security — and it is the one that actually has a clock on it.

What waiting actually buys you

From your full retirement age up to 70, every month you hold off adds two-thirds of one percent to your check. Social Security calls those delayed retirement credits. Call it about 8% a year.

At 70 those credits stop completely. Wait past 70 and your check does not get any bigger.

So 70 is not a deadline. It is a ceiling. Nobody penalises you for going past it — you just stop earning anything by waiting.

The bottom line

Nobody forces you to draw Social Security. Pick the age that fits your health and your budget, and just know that at 70 the waiting stops paying.
